Days 1 to 3: Stone Town and the sea
Two days in town (Stone Town in one day), including the Forodhani market and a spice tour. On day three, Safari Blue: the most complete boat trip for a single day.
Days 4 to 6: the east coast

Jozani on the way, then Paje and Jambiani. Alternate swimming at high tide with activities at low tide: kitesurfing, Kuza cave, a seaweed farm visit. See tides and swimming.
Days 7 to 9: the north

Nungwi and Kendwa can be swum at almost any hour. Take a trip to Mnemba for snorkelling or diving, and a sunset dhow cruise. To learn to dive: get your Open Water (three days, best placed here).
Budget: where the money goes
Accommodation weighs most. Over ten days, three hotels instead of ten nights in one place cost road time (about 1 hour from Stone Town to Paje, 1 hour 30 to the north) but not necessarily more money. Excursions add up: count 3 to 5 paid trips on this programme. Details in the daily budget.
Where to sleep
Compare areas in where to stay in Zanzibar; on a tight budget, bungalows and guesthouses; to go up a level, luxury hotels.
Variants
Add a safari from Zanzibar in exchange for two beach days, or see Tanzania and Zanzibar combined. Shorter: 5 days or 7 days.
