Safari Blue Zanzibar: reviews, price, itinerary and alternatives

Updated on October 23, 2026

Safari Blue is the best-known day at sea in southern Zanzibar: an outing on a dhow (traditional sailing boat) in Menai Bay, a marine conservation area, with snorkelling, a sandbank, a swim in a mangrove lagoon and a seafood lunch on Kwale Island. The name refers both to the original operator and, loosely, to similar trips sold by other agencies, so price and content vary a lot from one offer to another. The prices below come from the Safari Blue operator's own site and from booking offers seen in October 2026.

A wooden sailing boat with a lateen sail in turquoise water: it is the main means of transport for the day. You sail, stop to swim, and have lunch ashore on arrival.

Trips leave from the Fumba peninsula on the south-west coast, where you board fishing boats and dhows. The ride from your hotel is part of the day.

Practical info

Tips

  • The operator's site shows 85 USD per adult (15 and over) and 45 USD for children aged 6 to 14, with snorkel gear, a snorkelling guide, and food and drinks all day; a private dhow package at 550 USD for two and a "bubble boat" option also exist. Agencies and resellers list 85 to 150 USD per adult, with or without hotel transfer; the transfer is the main difference. A trip shared with other tourists costs less per person; a small private group costs more but is more flexible. Dolphins in the bay are not guaranteed. To avoid disappointment: bring reef-safe sunscreen, a towel, a hat and dry clothes. Alternatives: for a shorter, cheaper trip from Stone Town, see Prison Island and Nakupenda; for dolphins, compare with Kizimkazi; for a reef richer in fish in the north-east, see Mnemba.

How to get there

Departure by boat from Fumba (south-west), about 30 to 40 minutes by road from Stone Town depending on traffic (estimate, not confirmed); most offers include hotel pickup, including from the north and east, with more road time. Book ahead in high season.
