Mnemba Atoll, Zanzibar: snorkelling and dolphins, which tour to choose (from Nungwi, Matemwe)

Updated on October 23, 2026

Mnemba Atoll is a small island ringed by a coral reef off Zanzibar's north-east coast, in a marine protected area. The island itself is private (a luxury lodge occupies it): you do not land, you swim and snorkel around it from the boat. It is one of the best places on the island to see reef fish, turtles and, with luck, dolphins. The prices below are ranges from booking sites and operators in October 2026: the point to check is always whether the marine conservation fee is included.

Highlights

The reef around the island

Turquoise water and striped fish right off Mnemba's white beach. Snorkelling is at the edge of the reef, with a guide from the boat; you cannot set foot on the island.

A low wooded island in the middle of the ocean, a few kilometres off the coast. Boats stop at several snorkelling spots around it, depending on swell and current.

Tips

  • A shared half day (about 4 hours, roughly 8 am to noon) is listed at 30 to 65 USD per person depending on the operator, with hotel transfer in some offers. The Mnemba conservation fee is sometimes included and sometimes to pay on top before departure: some offers quote 15 USD, others 25 USD, and one dive centre 30 USD; no official source was found, so confirm the amount with the operator. A longer or private trip goes up to about 280 USD with fees and hotel pickup, excluding lunch. Dolphins are not guaranteed: one site claims a 70% encounter rate in the morning, an unverified marketing figure. Do not chase dolphins in a group in the water, and pick a boat that keeps its distance. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, a hat and seasickness medication. For scuba diving, see diving in Zanzibar; for staying in the area, see Matemwe.

How to get there

By boat from Matemwe (the closest), Kendwa or Nungwi, or from nearby beaches depending on the operator; the crossing takes from a few tens of minutes to about an hour depending on the departure point. Most offers include hotel pickup in the north or north-east; from Stone Town, allow a transfer of about an hour and a half or more (not confirmed).

Opening hours

Best: In the morning, June to October
Half day of about 4 hours (departure around 8 am) or full day depending on the offer (exact times given at booking)
