Matemwe Beach: peace and quiet, and departure point for Mnemba Atoll

Updated on October 23, 2026

Matemwe, on the north-east coast of Zanzibar, is a fishing village with a long white-sand beach, discreet hotels and little nightlife. Its asset: Mnemba Atoll lies off the village, and most snorkelling and diving trips to Mnemba leave from here or from the north. It is a good choice for those who want quiet, good accommodation and trips at sea, less so for those looking for restaurants and bars. The tide is marked: a 2026 guide consulted describes the sea retreating by almost half a kilometre at low tide.

Highlights

The beach and the palm trees

The beach and the palm trees

A white-sand beach lined with palms, often almost empty. At low tide, rocks and pools appear near the shore.

White sand at low tide

White sand at low tide

A wide stretch of sand where you walk far out over the sea floor. Villagers collect octopus, shells and seaweed there at low tide.

The trips to Mnemba

Boats leave in the morning to snorkel at Mnemba (dolphins and turtles possible, not guaranteed); compare offers on the Mnemba page.

Diving

Several centres in the north and east organise dives; see diving in Zanzibar.

Tips

  • Which beach for whom? Matemwe suits couples, travellers looking for quiet and snorkelling or diving fans who accept a rather quiet village in the evening. For more activity, look at Nungwi, about half an hour away by road (estimate); for a sea that is easier at low tide, Kendwa. At low tide you can swim in clear water but must walk far: find out the day's tide times. Seaweed is mostly a matter further south; ask your hotel. Boat trips are offered by hotels, agencies and beach sellers: compare price, length, equipment provided and what is included, and check that the operator keeps its distance from the dolphins. To choose accommodation, read where to stay in Zanzibar. The information comes from travel guides, not an official beach website.

How to get there

Matemwe is about 1 to 1.25 hours by road from the airport and Stone Town (guide estimate). Private transfer or taxi booked in advance: see from the airport to your hotel. Public transport is scarce: plan on a transfer.

Opening hours

Best: Early morning, June to October
Beach open access at all hours; boat trips mostly in the morning (time given at booking).
