Kiwengwa Beach: all-inclusive resorts and turquoise sea

Updated on October 23, 2026

Kiwengwa, on the east coast north of the island's centre, is the area of the big resorts: long all-inclusive hotels lined up along a white-sand beach, with pools, spas and entertainment. The sea is turquoise and swimming is easier than in the south-east, but the tide is felt: according to the guides consulted in October 2026, the sea pulls back at low tide and the water is shallower. The village itself is small: people come mainly for a resort stay, not for street life or independent restaurants.

Highlights

Kiwengwa Beach

Kiwengwa Beach

Very fine white sand and turquoise water, with shades of blue where the bottom is sandy. At high tide swimming is pleasant; at low tide you must walk further to reach water.

The all-inclusive resorts

Several big hotels occupy the beach, with their own access and sunbeds reserved for guests. Check what the package includes (meals, drinks, activities) before booking.

Trips from the beach

Hotels offer excursions; for Mnemba it is usually simpler to leave from Matemwe or Nungwi; see Mnemba.

Practical info

Tips

  • Which beach for whom? Kiwengwa suits families, couples and anyone who wants an effortless all-inclusive stay with a pool and entertainment. If you prefer going out to eat in independent restaurants, Nungwi or Paje are livelier; for quiet, Matemwe. Also check where your hotel sits: at low tide some stretches of beach are poor for swimming, and the resort pool then does the job. Seaweed can appear depending on the season; sources differ, so ask your hotel. All-inclusive hotels cost more in high season (check the dates); compare areas in where to stay in Zanzibar. The information comes from travel guides, not an official beach website.

How to get there

Kiwengwa is about 45 minutes to 1 hour by road from the airport and Stone Town (guide estimate). Most resorts offer a transfer; otherwise book a taxi or private transfer: see from the airport to your hotel.

Opening hours

Best: High tide, June to October
The beach is open access, but entry through hotels and their private areas may be restricted; ask. No fixed hours.
