Michamvi Kae is the beach at the end of the Michamvi peninsula, on the south-east coast of Zanzibar, north of Paje and Bwejuu. It is a quieter and more spread-out area than Paje, with a few hotels and bars on the sand where people come mainly for the sunset. Guides name the Kae Funk bar for its party mood at dusk, and Kae Beach Restaurant. The Rock restaurant is a few minutes away by road, at Pingwe. As on the whole east coast, the tide changes the look of the beach: check the times before you go. Travel times come from hotel listings, not official sources.
Highlights

The rock at high tide
On the peninsula, the water is turquoise at high tide. At low tide the sea draws back far and you walk on the sand. The The Rock restaurant is very close.

Low tide
The same area at low tide: you see the reef and the pools. It is the right time for a walk, not for swimming.
The sunset
Travellers settle on the beach with a drink to watch the sky change colour. The bars offer loungers and music in the evening.

Tips
- Come in the late afternoon for the sunset, with a way to get back: there are few taxis on the spot in the evening, so ask your hotel or the bar to book the driver. For a seafood lunch with your feet in the water, see The Rock. To swim at any hour, prefer the north: Kendwa. For a livelier base on the same coast, see Paje; for more calm, Bwejuu.
How to get there
Michamvi Kae is about 20 to 30 minutes by car from Paje (according to hotel listings), and about 1 to 1.5 hours by road from the airport and Stone Town (estimate). Private transfer or taxi to book in advance: see from the airport to your hotel. See also the Paje and Jambiani guide.
