The Rock Restaurant Zanzibar: Booking, Prices, Access and Tide
The Rock is a seafood restaurant perched on a rock in the Indian Ocean, on the east coast of Zanzibar, at Pingwe on the Michamvi peninsula. It is one of the most photographed places on the island: at low tide you walk to it, at high tide you go by boat. There are two rules to remember: book ahead, and book according to the tide. The prices below come from guides and are not confirmed by the restaurant; a main course is said to be around 30 dollars according to a travel article whose date is unclear.
Highlights

The restaurant at low tide
The rock can be reached on foot across sand and tide pools: this is the simplest and cheapest version. Wear sandals that can get wet.

The rock surrounded by water
At high tide, the dining room seems to float. You cross by boat, which is more spectacular but depends on the time of your booking.
The food
Seafood (prawns, lobster, crab, fish) and European-inspired dishes, with fresh pasta according to guides. Several travellers find the dishes less memorable than the setting for the price: come mainly for the place.

Tips
- Book, especially in high season, and choose the time according to the tide: ask the restaurant whether there is water at your time (high tide for the boat, low tide for the walk) and whether a deposit is requested (one traveller says so). If you book through a hotel or guide, ask whether the price includes drinks and the boat crossing. Allow about 30 dollars or more per person for a meal, drinks extra (confirm when booking). Do not plan to swim: this is a restaurant, not a beach. To combine with other east coast outings: Paje beach, Bwejuu beach, Michamvi Kae beach, and the Paje and Jambiani guide. A sunset is not possible here: the east coast faces the sunrise. Prices and hours come from travel guides, not from the official site.
How to get there
The restaurant is at Pingwe on the east coast, a short distance from Paje and Michamvi Kae. From Paje, Jambiani or Bwejuu a taxi or transfer is simplest; from Stone Town or the north, allow about one to one and a half hours by road. Ask your hotel to book the driver and the return, as there are few taxis on site. See getting around Zanzibar.
