Kitesurfing in Paje: spots, schools, wind season and lesson prices (2026)

Updated on October 23, 2026

Paje, on the south-east coast of Zanzibar, is the island's big kitesurfing spot: a shallow lagoon where you can stand almost everywhere, a steady trade wind and several schools lined up on the beach. It is a good place to learn, because the water is calm and there is little risk of drifting out to sea. There are two wind seasons: the kusi, from June to September, with August often the strongest, and the kaskazi, from December to February, weaker and not every day. Schools display prices in dollars: as an example, a one-hour private lesson at 95 USD and a 10-hour course at 750 USD, taken from the B4 school's price list in October 2026.

Highlights

The kitesurf jump

The kitesurf jump

Experienced kitesurfers jump in the lagoon when the wind is well established. It is a show to watch from the beach, even if you do not practise.

The board and the kite

Tips

  • Prices seen in October 2026: guides mention 60 to 100 USD an hour for a lesson with a certified instructor, and the B4 school's price list shows 95 USD for a one-hour private lesson, 490 USD for a 6-hour course over 3 days and 750 USD for a 10-hour course over 5 days. A rate around 20 USD an hour should raise suspicion. Guides name several IKO-certified schools on the beach (Kite Center Zanzibar, Bkite Zanzibar, SunSeaBar Kite School, B4 Kitesurf Zanzibar). Before booking, check recent reviews, the student-to-instructor ratio and the policy for insufficient wind: a course without wind should be reschedulable. Equipment is generally included in the lesson. Check the tide for your slot: at low tide the riding zone moves.

How to get there

Paje is about 1 hour by road from the airport and Stone Town (guides' estimate). The schools are on the beach, within walking distance of the Paje hotels. Private transfer or taxi to book in advance: see from the airport to your hotel.

Opening hours

Best: June to September, kusi wind
