Jambiani Beach: white sand, calm and hotels on the south-east coast
Jambiani is a fishing village stretched along a long white-sand beach, south of Paje. Guides describe it as a quieter version of Paje: fewer people, small hotels and guesthouses by the sea, dhows beached on the sand and seaweed farms that shape the landscape. As on the whole east coast, the tide is very strong: at low tide the sea moves away and you walk across a huge shallow lagoon, before the water returns at high tide for swimming. Plan your day around the tide.
Highlights

The beach and the dhows
A long white-sand beach lined with palms, with fishing boats. At low tide the sea disappears far away; at high tide the water comes back up to the dry sand.

The seaweed farms
Farmers work in the shallows at low tide, gathering and tying seaweed on ropes. A walking visit with a local guide is possible; ask the price and what is included before setting off.
Kuza Cave
A natural cave with a freshwater pool, a short distance away; see Kuza Cave.
The Kizimkazi dolphins
To the south, boat trips go looking for dolphins; first read the page on Kizimkazi, especially about ethics.

Tips
- Which beach for whom? Jambiani suits travellers who want peace, gentler prices and authentic village life, and who accept working around the tide. For activity, kite lessons and cafés, look at Paje, a few kilometres north; the Paje and Jambiani guide compares the two. Seaweed can wash up on the sand depending on the season; sources disagree on the months, and hotels often clean the front of their beach. Ask your hotel. In the village, dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered) and ask before photographing people. Wear water shoes (sea urchins). To choose accommodation, read where to stay in Zanzibar. The information comes from travel guides, not an official beach website.
How to get there
Jambiani is about 1 to 1.25 hours by road from the airport and Stone Town (guide estimate). Private transfer or taxi booked in advance: see from the airport to your hotel. Dala-dalas serve the south-east coast from Stone Town; check the routes on the spot.
