Beach boys and touts

Nungwi beach

Beach boys are described as pushy rather than dangerous: a firm, polite no is usually enough. The scams are mostly opportunistic. Excursions bought from unregistered operators can be badly run: book through your hotel or an established agency, and compare two or three prices.

The most common traps

For transport from the airport, see from the airport to your hotel.

The sea and the tides

East coast tides are dramatic and, according to one source, the sea has injured and killed tourists: check the tide time and conditions before swimming, do not swim alone far from shore and follow the advice of your hotel or kitesurf school. Tide times change every day. For the difference between beaches, see when to go to Zanzibar.

Health

Drink bottled water, since tap water is not drinkable according to guides, and protect yourself from mosquitoes. For vaccines and malaria, see a doctor before leaving: read visa, vaccines and entry rules. A Tanzania eSIM lets you call a taxi, a hotel or assistance from arrival.

Respecting local customs

Zanzibar is mostly Muslim: cover up in town and villages, be discreet during Ramadan, and ask permission before photographing someone. See Stone Town.
