Jozani Forest: red colobus monkeys, entry fee and visit from Paje or Stone Town

Updated on October 23, 2026

Jozani-Chwaka Bay National Park, in south-central Zanzibar, is the island's only national park and the last refuge of the Zanzibar red colobus (Piliocolobus kirkii), a monkey found nowhere else. You see them a few metres away, often near the entrance, in the trees along the path. The visit also includes a forest trail and a wooden walkway through the mangrove. It takes 1 to 3 hours, and combines easily with the east coast. The prices below come from booking sites and guides in October 2026: sources differ and no recent official fee was found, so confirm it at the entrance.

Highlights

The Zanzibar red colobus

The Zanzibar red colobus

Reddish, black and white coat; the groups are used to visitors and spend time on the ground as well as in the trees. Keep your distance, do not touch them and do not feed them.

The mangrove

The mangrove

A wooden walkway of about 1 km, according to one guide, crosses the mangrove on the south side of the park, among roots and mud where crabs and small fish live. There is also a forest trail.

Practical info

Tips

  • Entry is about 10 to 12 USD per person depending on the source, guide included, or 12,000 to 25,000 TZS according to one site; no official fee was found, nor child rates. Guided visits of about 3 hours from Stone Town are listed at 38 to 40 USD per adult, sometimes with the entry fee to pay on top (about 12 USD according to one offer); longer offers combine Jozani with a local zoo, swimming with turtles or lunch at The Rock restaurant (not verified). Follow the guide: the colobus are vulnerable, do not give them food and do not touch them. For a simpler visit, come by rental car or taxi from Paje; the road runs through the area. Combine with a beach day at Paje or a spice farm visit.

How to get there

The park is on the road between Stone Town and the south-east coast (Paje, Jambiani), about 35 km from Stone Town (estimate, not confirmed), reachable by taxi, rental car, dala-dala or an excursion with transfer. From Paje, allow a short ride of about 20 to 30 minutes (estimate). If you prefer to drive, you can rent a car for the day.

Opening hours

Best: Early morning, in the dry season
About 7:30 am to 5 pm according to a reference site (unofficial: to be confirmed); guided visit of about 1 to 3 hours
