Zanzibar Butterfly Centre in Pete: price, opening hours and how to get there (2026)

Updated on October 26, 2026

The Zanzibar Butterfly Centre is a butterfly garden in the village of Pete, in the middle of the island, about 1 km from the entrance of Jozani Forest. A third-party guide lists US$6 per adult and US$3 per child (figures not confirmed by the centre); a visit takes about 1 hour. Opening hours could not be confirmed: call ahead or ask your hotel. The easiest way is to visit it together with Jozani on the same day, on a tour with transfers (about US$63 to US$67 per person on booking sites in October 2026) rather than getting there on your own.

The centre is one kilometre from the entrance of Jozani Forest, home of the red colobus monkeys: the two visits fit in half a day (photo: a Jozani colobus, not a butterfly from the centre).

The butterfly garden

Tropical butterflies fly freely in a covered space, with a guide for names and life cycles. Visit in the warm, sunny hours, when they are most active.

Combined tours

Jozani + Butterfly Centre tours last 4 to 6 hours; others add Salaam Cave, Mtende beach or a spice tour, for US$120 to US$150 as a private trip.

Tips

  • Prices seen in October 2026: US$63 to US$67 per person for a group tour with Jozani and transfers (entry fees sometimes optional), US$120 to US$150 for a private day with a beach or cave. If you book a tour, check that the centre's entry fee is included. Bring cash in shillings for the entry if you come alone. Butterflies are most active in the sun: avoid a rainy day. For the monkeys, see Jozani Forest; to fill the day, the spice farm.
