Maalum Cave is a natural freshwater swimming pool in a coral cave, privately owned, on the edge of Paje. A blog lists US$20 per adult and US$10 per child, for a session limited to 1 hour 30, with aqua shoes, tube, life jacket, snorkelling gear and a locker included; sunscreen is not allowed. One source says no more than 20 swimmers per 90-minute slot: book ahead. These figures come from third-party sites (October 2026) and need confirming. The neighbouring Paje cave (near Jambiani) is about US$10 per person, according to an agency.
Highlights

Paje next door
For a full day on the east coast, combine the cave with Paje beach at low tide (illustration photo of the beach, not the cave). See Paje.
Swimming in the cave
Warm, clear freshwater with a few fish: several reviews call it a calm and very pleasant spot; one review finds the price a little high. The session lasts 1 hour 30.
Combined packages
Tours combine Maalum with Jozani, Salaam Cave, a blue lagoon or the sunset, for US$135 to US$150; the Maalum entry alone with transfer is around US$70 to US$80.

Tips
- Book a specific slot (especially in high season) and arrive on time: the session is timed. Leave sunscreen at the hotel. Do not confuse it with the Paje cave (another freshwater cave, about US$10, near Jambiani, whose entry fee supports a local school) or with Salaam Cave. Tours combined with Jozani are better value than two separate trips: see Jozani Forest. For tides, see tides and swimming.
How to get there
On the edge of Paje, on the east coast: about 1 hour by road from Stone Town (estimate). Hotels in Paje and Jambiani arrange transfers; otherwise take a taxi or motorbike taxi. See getting around Zanzibar.
