Muyuni Beach, Zanzibar: hotels, snorkelling and trips to Mnemba (2026)

Updated on October 25, 2026

Muyuni is a beach on Zanzibar's north-east coast, in the Matemwe area, about 16 km from Nungwi and from Kiwengwa according to a listing consulted in October 2026. It is a quieter corner than Nungwi or Kiwengwa, with white sand, reefs in front of some hotels and a departure point for boat trips to Mnemba atoll. People mostly come to sleep: the Iberostar Selection Zanzibar (all-inclusive) has direct beach access, and small places such as Zaharani Muyuni also exist. For a stay without a car, the beach alone is not enough: plan excursions.

Highlights

White sand

The north-east coast is known for its long white-sand beaches; the photo shows the neighbouring beach of Matemwe.

Boat trips leave from the beaches of Matemwe and Muyuni for the island, for snorkelling with turtles and fish; one listing mentions a sandbank visible at low tide.

The reefs in front of the hotel

Iberostar advertises coral reefs right in front of the beach; check sea conditions and tides before swimming.

Practical info

Tips

  • To sort your options: (1) all-inclusive on site (Iberostar Selection, suited to families and those who do not want to move); (2) guesthouse or small hotel (Zaharani Muyuni, private beach access, snorkelling cited) for a tighter budget; (3) base in Matemwe, with more places and restaurants, a few kilometres away. Muyuni's tide is not described in any of our sources: ask the hotel whether the sea recedes at low tide. Trips to Mnemba are booked in advance; see Mnemba, Matemwe, Kiwengwa and Nungwi, as well as the all-inclusive hotels.

How to get there

About 1 hour to 1 hour 30 from the airport or Stone Town depending on traffic (estimate, not confirmed by our sources); private transfer or hotel transfer.

Opening hours

Best: June to October
Beach freely accessible; boat trips in the morning, depending on tide.
