What to plan for
| Topic | What to know |
|---|---|
| Stroller | Bring a light one with wide wheels, or a carrier: sand, no pavements, the lanes of Stone Town |
| Car seat | Taxis and transfers usually do not have one; ask the transfer company in writing or bring a folding seat |
| Babysitting | Ask the hotel: availability and rates vary, and kids' clubs often set a minimum age |
| Milk, nappies | Bring a stock for the first days; hotel shops are expensive with little choice |
| Water | Bottled water for bottles too, never tap water |
Beach, heat and tide
With a baby the north coast is simplest: at Kendwa you can swim almost at any hour, while on the east coast the sea goes far out at low tide; see tides and swimming. The sun is strong all year: shade, parasol, UV clothing, and outings early in the morning or late afternoon. Ask your paediatrician how to protect an infant from the sun at what age.
Hotels that suit a baby

Look for a shallow pool, air conditioning, shade and a restaurant open all day. The all-inclusive resorts in the north and east often have a kids' club, but the entry age differs from hotel to hotel: family hotels in Zanzibar compares several, and TUI Blue Bahari lists a kids' pool and a playground. Allow 1 h 10 to 1 h 15 by road to Nungwi, see from the airport to your hotel.
Health and insurance
Talk to a doctor about malaria and vaccines several weeks before leaving: vaccines and malaria. Travel insurance is compulsory to enter Zanzibar; check on the official page whether infants are included: compulsory insurance.
