Lake Eyasi: meeting the Hadzabe, price and ethics of the visit (2026)
Lake Eyasi is a seasonal salt lake in the Rift Valley of northern Tanzania, near Karatu. Around it live the Hadzabe, a hunter-gatherer people, and the Datoga, herders and blacksmiths. The typical visit is a day trip leaving very early (around dawn to join a hunt), then a visit to a Datoga village. Offers seen in October 2026 run from about USD 350 to 444 per person for a day from Arusha or Karatu, 6 to 12 hours depending on the option. From Zanzibar you must first fly to Arusha or Kilimanjaro: it is not an island excursion.
Highlights

The Rift landscape

The dawn hunt
The Hadzabe hunt with bows and gather berries and honey; the outing is on foot, early, and game is not guaranteed.
The Datoga village
A visit to a forge and beadwork workshop, often offered with the Hadzabe morning.

Tips
- This is the ethically trickiest visit in the region: choose a registered operator that pays a fee to the community, ask how the money is shared, give neither money nor sweets to children and ask before every photo. Prices vary a lot with duration and transport; compare what is included (meals, fees, guide) and read recent reviews. A multi-day version exists, from about USD 2,100 per person privately.
How to get there
Eyasi is about 2 to 3 hours by road from Arusha, with a dirt track at the end (estimate). Pickup in Arusha, Karatu or at Kilimanjaro airport depending on the offer; from Zanzibar, see Zanzibar to Kilimanjaro and Arusha. Combine with the Ngorongoro Crater and Lake Manyara.
