Ngorongoro Crater: day trip or 2-day safari from Zanzibar, price and what you see
The Ngorongoro Crater is a volcanic caldera about twenty kilometres wide, its floor around 600 metres below the rim, a UNESCO site known for its density of animals in a closed space: lions, elephants, hippos, wildebeest, zebras and one of the few places in Tanzania where you can hope to see the black rhino. According to a travel site consulted in October 2026, conservation-area entry is 70.80 dollars per adult per 24 hours (January 2026 rate) and the descent into the crater 295 dollars per vehicle, figures to confirm. From Zanzibar, the simplest option is a 2-day fly-in safari to Arusha with the crater and Tarangire, from about 625 to 1,240 dollars per person depending on the offer.
Highlights

The big animals of the crater floor
Elephants, buffalo, hyenas and lions can be seen in the same morning. Giraffes do not live here, but herds of wildebeest and zebra are large.

The zebras of the plain
Zebra herds graze in the open, without a long walk: 4x4 vehicles drive the track on the floor.
Lake Magadi
A shallow lake at the centre of the crater where flamingos are sometimes numerous and hippos and waterbirds gather.

Tips
- The most important thing is to arrive early: the descent starts at dawn, before the crowds and the afternoon haze. Compare what the offer includes: conservation-area and descent fees (more than 365 dollars for a small group), lunch, the vehicle (pop-up roof) and the number of people per car. Day trips from Arusha (about 10 hours, in the range of 115 to 370 dollars in the offers consulted) are possible but tiring: about 3 to 4 hours of driving each way according to travellers. If you start from Zanzibar, a 2-day fly-in safari is more restful. Dress warmly: the rim is at about 2,300 to 2,400 metres and mornings are cool. Rhinos and leopards are never guaranteed. See Tarangire, Serengeti and the Tanzania or Zanzibar comparison.
How to get there
From Zanzibar, fly to Arusha (about 1 hour to 1 hour 20, direct flights) then drive to Ngorongoro, or have the flight included in the 2-day package with hotel pick-up. Lodges are on the rim or in Karatu, at the foot of the crater. See Arusha.
