Mto wa Mbu: visiting the village at the foot of Lake Manyara, bike tour, market and prices (2026)

Updated on October 25, 2026

Mto wa Mbu, "river of mosquitoes" in Swahili, is a lively village at the entrance of Lake Manyara National Park, on the road from Arusha to Ngorongoro and the Serengeti. Many safaris sleep here or drive through without stopping, yet the village deserves 2 to 3 hours: banana plantations, market, Makonde carving workshops and Datoga blacksmiths. Sources of October 2026 give about 26 to 30 euros for a 2-hour guided bike ride and 200 dollars per person for a half-day cultural visit on GetYourGuide.

Highlights

The main street and market

The main street and market

Fruit, bananas (the village lives on them), fabrics and crafts; this is where the nearby lodges do their shopping.

The fields and banana plantations

The fields and banana plantations

The village cultural tourism programme offers walks or bike rides through banana and coffee plantations, with a school visit, banana beer tasting and a Datoga blacksmith demonstration; each activity is paid separately and the income supports local projects.

The Makonde workshops

Carvers in wood and ebony: you can watch them work, with no obligation to buy.

Practical info

Tips

  • Choose by your time. Free or almost: stroll the main street alone (30 minutes). About 26 to 30 euros: 2 hours of guided cycling through the crops, the best value for discovery. About 200 dollars per person: GetYourGuide's half-day cultural tour, better for a small private group. Bikes can also be rented on the spot along the road. Negotiate before leaving and avoid touts in cars: book through the village cultural programme or your lodge. Combine with Lake Manyara National Park; the next stop is the Ngorongoro crater. To sleep before departure, see Arusha.

How to get there

About 2 to 2.5 hours from Arusha on the paved Ngorongoro road (estimate, no official source). From Zanzibar, fly to Arusha, then drive. Most visitors stop here during a safari.

Opening hours

Best: June to October, mornings
Village open all day; guided visits are booked for the morning, before the heat.
