Serengeti National Park: how many days, price, the Great Migration and how to add it to a Zanzibar trip

Updated on October 25, 2026

The Serengeti is Tanzania's most famous park, a UNESCO site with vast plains, lions, cheetahs and the Great Migration of wildebeest and zebras. It is far from Arusha: offers consulted in October 2026 run from a 3-day group trip from about 900 dollars per person (with Ngorongoro) to about 1,450 dollars for 2 luxury days with a flight and over 2,200 dollars for 3 private days with a domestic flight. Entry is given at around 83 dollars per adult per 24 hours by a 2026 guide (other sources say about 71 dollars), with no official confirmation, plus a stay fee if you sleep in the park. For a Zanzibar traveller: allow at least 3 days.

Highlights

The zebras and the herds

The zebras and the herds

In the Seronera valley, at the centre of the park, zebras, wildebeest and giraffes can be seen all year, with the predators that follow them.

Plains to the horizon

Plains to the horizon

The savanna landscape with lone acacias is the postcard one; the light is best at dawn and late in the day.

The Great Migration

The herds move with the rains: births in the south (about January to March), river crossings in the north (about July to October). Exact dates change every year and nothing is guaranteed.

Practical info

Tips

  • Compare three points before booking: the number of nights in the park (a 2-day drive safari from Arusha is mostly road), the flight (a domestic flight costs more but saves a day) and the accommodation (camping, mid-range or lodge; a supplement of 60 to 70 dollars per adult per night is cited for lodges inside the park). A balloon safari is offered from about 599 dollars. For a first safari, a 3 to 4-day package combining Serengeti and Ngorongoro is more reasonable than the Serengeti alone. See Ngorongoro, Tarangire and the Tanzania or Zanzibar comparison.

How to get there

From Zanzibar, fly to Arusha (about 1 hour to 1 hour 20), then drive (long: the park is several hours by track) or take a small plane to an airstrip in the park, depending on the package. See Arusha.

Opening hours

Best: June to October (migration July to October)
2 to 5 days depending on the package; very early start from Arusha. Park hours: to confirm with the agency.
