| Animal | Where to hope for it | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Rhino | Ngorongoro Crater | About 25 to 30 animals according to one operator, never guaranteed |
| Lion | Serengeti, also Tarangire and Manyara | The Serengeti is quoted for Africa's largest population |
| Leopard | Serengeti, Tarangire, Manyara | Often in trees, active at dawn and dusk |
| Elephant | Tarangire | Also common across the north |
| Buffalo | Almost everywhere | The easiest to see |
How to build the route
You need at least three parks to maximise your chances: Tarangire for elephants, the Serengeti for big cats, Ngorongoro for rhino. Allow 5 days or more. If time is short, read Serengeti or Ngorongoro. For a full park comparison, see which park to choose.
When to go
The dry season, June to October, concentrates animals around water and thins the vegetation: it is the most favourable for sightings. Month-by-month detail in the best time to visit Tanzania.
Staying realistic
Rhino remain rare across the country, including at Ngorongoro, and leopards rarely show themselves; a good guide improves your odds without guaranteeing them. Pick an operator who states these limits.
FAQ
Can you see the Big Five in 3 days?
It is possible but tight; over 5 to 6 days your chances are better.
Which is the hardest to see?
The rhino because of its rarity, the leopard because of its discretion.
Is the Serengeti enough?
It offers lions, leopards, buffalo and elephants; rhino are better sought at Ngorongoro.
