- Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge: 74 rooms and suites built along the crater edge, each with a stone balcony over the crater; standard room from 383 USD, Kimba Suite from 518 USD; spa free for guests, restaurant and bar with views. Pick it for the effortless view; limit: its page states no children's policy, and the crater descent costs extra.
- Gibbs Farm (Karatu): on the outer slopes of the crater, cottages and houses on a farm that roasts its own coffee and cooks with produce from the property. Pick it for calm and a stay of several days; limit: rates are not published on the page, ask for them, and there is no direct crater view.
- Ngorongoro Explorer (Elewana, ex-Sopa Lodge): announced for 2025 under the Explorer brand, like the Serengeti Explorer that reopened in May 2024; we could not read its room count, so check its status before booking.
- &Beyond Ngorongoro Crater Lodge: a luxury address on the rim, shown as closed until December 2027 for refurbishment on the group's site. One to keep in mind for later.
Prices and booking
Crater fees come on top: 82 USD a day plus 295 USD per vehicle according to one operator (see the cost of a safari). Many travellers book the night through the safari operator. For the descent, see the Ngorongoro Crater.
Cold and season
The rim is above 2,000 m and nights are cool all year: pack warm layers, see what to wear on safari. June to October is high season: book early.
FAQ
Do I have to sleep on the crater rim?
No. Karatu is enough if you go down early and prefer a quieter or cheaper lodge.
How many nights?
One night is enough for a day in the crater; two if you rest after the Serengeti.
Are there animals near the lodge?
Animals sometimes cross the lodge area; follow the hotel's rules for moving around at night.
