Tanga (Tanzania): Amboni Caves, Pangani and the north coast, day trip and prices (2026)
Tanga is a port city in northern Tanzania, near the Kenyan border, little visited by tourists. The main draw is the Amboni Caves, about 8 km north-west, presented as the largest limestone cave system in East Africa. A 6-hour excursion with transfer from Tanga, caves plus a stop in Pangani, costs about 90 dollars per person on GetYourGuide in October 2026. Tanga is far from Zanzibar: it is a detour for those exploring the mainland coast.

- Compare: the 6-hour GetYourGuide excursion (about 90 dollars, transfer from your Tanga hotel, stop in Pangani) is the simplest; the guided bike outing (about 65,000 shillings) is the cheapest; by dala-dala, allow about 1,000 shillings for the road to the caves and get off at the junction near the forestry office, according to Lonely Planet (old rates). How to get there
From Dar es Salaam, about 6 hours by bus (Wikivoyage; ticket around 13,000 shillings, old rate). We did not confirm a Tanga-Zanzibar or Pemba ferry.
