Usambara Mountains (Lushoto): hikes, Irente, Magamba and how to get there (2026)
The Usambara Mountains are a green range in north-eastern Tanzania, far from the beaches; Lushoto, in the West Usambaras, is the gateway. People come to walk from village to village on good trails, with views over the plain. In October 2026 GetYourGuide offers an 8-hour private day with Soni Falls (from about 300 dollars) and a 4-day private trek (from about 650 dollars). For a Zanzibar stay, it is a detour of 2 to 4 days on the mainland.
Highlights

The views over the plain
The ridges overlook cultivated valleys; the Irente viewpoint is a walk up from Lushoto, with a stop at Irente Farm (bread, cheese, juice).

The villages and Magamba forest
Traditional houses, gardens and a mountain rainforest; the 4-day trek goes through Magamba, a pottery village and Mtae.
Soni Falls
A waterfall in the south of the West Usambaras, visited on a day excursion.

For Amani Nature Reserve, in the East Usambaras, see the Tanga offer. See also Tanga, Pangani and visa, vaccines and formalities.
