Bagamoyo Tanzania: day trip from Dar es Salaam, Kaole ruins, prices and which tour to choose

Updated on October 25, 2026

Bagamoyo is a small coastal town in Tanzania, about 75 kilometres north of Dar es Salaam, that was the last major stop of the ivory and slave caravans from the interior before the dhow crossing to Zanzibar. You can see an old town, a Catholic mission, the Kaole ruins (two mosques and about thirty tombs from the 13th century according to Wikipedia) and a quiet beach. It is visited in a day of 8 to 12 hours from Dar es Salaam; from Zanzibar, allow an extra day because the link remains to be confirmed. The prices below are ranges from October 2026, from booking sites.

Highlights

Tips

  • Which tour to choose from Dar es Salaam: the cheapest is a shared small group with lunch from about 136 dollars, per GetYourGuide; the 8-hour historical tour with hotel pickup starts at about 187 dollars (4.6 from 13 reviews); a private day with lunch costs about 286 dollars, and a simple private return transfer about 266 to 295 dollars for 2 people. Elsewhere, a private day with lunch is shown at 273 dollars (Kaole fees included) and a very cheap group tour at 55 dollars (Kaole, caravan serai, old town, mission museum). An arts and culture version of 12 hours costs about 230 to 239 dollars; packages with Saadani National Park go up to 500 to 570 dollars. Our view: the 8-hour historical tour is the best compromise; the 55-dollar tour suits small budgets if you accept simpler transport. The drive from Dar es Salaam takes about 1 h 20 to 2 hours depending on traffic: do not take this trip on the day of your ferry to Zanzibar. World Heritage status is not confirmed: according to our sources the central slave and ivory trade route is only on Tanzania's tentative list, despite what some sites say. To prepare your trip, see Dar es Salaam, the Dar es Salaam - Zanzibar ferry, Stone Town and the best time for Zanzibar.
