Fumba, Zanzibar: peninsula, hotels, dolphins and where to stay near the airport (2026)

Updated on October 25, 2026

Fumba is a peninsula in south-west Zanzibar, on Menai Bay, less than 30 minutes by road from the airport and Stone Town according to most sources consulted in October 2026 (one source says 45 to 60 minutes: allow extra). It suits those who want a quiet stay away from the busy beaches of the north and east, an arrival or departure without a long transfer, or a boat trip in the Menai marine conservation area, where the dolphin outings leave from. It is not the island's most classic beach destination: to swim at any hour, look at Nungwi and Kendwa instead.

Highlights

The village and outriggers

The village and outriggers

Fumba is still a fishing village: outrigger canoes and fishing boats are the daily scenery, especially in the morning.

Menai Bay

A marine conservation area: dhow trips from Fumba go to dolphins and sandbanks; it is the departure point of the Safari Blue.

The seafront hotels

Fumba Beach Lodge (just over 30 rooms, pool, spa, restaurant, rated 3 stars) is the most cited; Blue Ocean Resort & Residences is another nearby choice.

Practical info

Tips

  • Three ways to choose: (1) sleep in Fumba for the Safari Blue and the calm, with a short transfer; (2) one night on arrival or departure if your flight is early or late; (3) for swimming, do not count on the beach alone: ask the hotel how the sea behaves at low tide. The Safari Blue (full day with snorkelling and lunch) is the activity that sells here; see the Safari Blue or Mnemba comparison. To compare hotels and prices, see where to stay in Zanzibar and airport to hotels. Distances vary by source: confirm the transfer time with the hotel.

How to get there

About 12 km from the airport as the crow flies, and under 30 minutes by car according to several sources (one source gives 45 to 60 minutes via Stone Town). Private transfer or taxi; no practical bus for visitors.

Opening hours

Best: June to October
Village and beach freely accessible; boat trips leave in the morning depending on tide and weather.
