The spots at a glance

From the beach: where, and at what tide

Nungwi is the most quoted for an unplanned swim with a mask: a narrow reef open to the sea, sand slopes with coral heads. Some rate Kendwa better, others find Nungwi more family-friendly. At Paje, Jambiani or Bwejuu you only swim well at high tide: check the time before going out, see tides and swimming.

Mnemba: the classic, with reservations

From Nungwi or Kendwa, trips last 3 to 6 hours. The best rating seen is a 4-hour small-group trip, 4.7 out of 5 from about 1,470 reviews, from USD 55; cheap departures at USD 17 to 25 exist. Masks and snorkels are usually provided; swimming with dolphins is never guaranteed and some reviews regret that weaker swimmers are left alone. If the sea is rough some boats change stop. Chumbe, Pungume, Bawe

Chumbe is the day for the best-preserved reef. Bawe is a half day from Stone Town. Pungume mixes snorkeling and a sandbank.
