Power cuts
The island is fed by a submarine cable from the mainland. When it failed, cuts lasted weeks (2008) and then months (2009-2010); a period of evening rationing was also reported, with no firm date. Some hotels have generators, but we have no list: ask before booking if air conditioning matters to you.
What to prepare
Bring a power bank, a light head torch and a travel power strip so several devices share one socket. Consider mobile data: see Tanzania eSIM. For a working stay, see Zanzibar as a digital nomad.
