eSIM or local SIM card

How to choose your plan

Estimate your needs: maps, messaging and light photos need little; video, video calls and tethering need a lot. For a week in Zanzibar, a plan of a few gigabytes is enough for most travellers, but check the validity period, which often starts at installation or at first connection depending on the provider. Keep your usual SIM card in the phone (dual SIM) if you want to keep receiving your bank's text messages.

Coverage: town, beaches, safari

The network is most reliable in Stone Town and on the busiest beaches of the north and east, according to travellers; it becomes patchy in national parks, in mountain huts and on mainland tracks. Warn your family before a safari or a Kilimanjaro climb and do not count on a connection at altitude. For the island, see Zanzibar in 4 days.

Local operators

Local SIM cards come from operators such as Vodacom, Airtel, Yas or Halotel, and the card is registered with an identity document; exact conditions change, ask at the shop. An eSIM avoids this step and the queue on arrival, but only a local card gives you a Tanzanian number to call a restaurant or a guide.

Before you leave

Install the eSIM before the flight, activate it on arrival and keep airplane mode on until the first connection. For entry formalities and insurance, see visa, vaccines and entry rules, for scams see scams and safety in Zanzibar and for getting to the hotel from the airport to your hotel.
