Mikumi Safari from Zanzibar: One or Two Days, Flight, Prices and What You See
Mikumi National Park is the easiest safari to do from Zanzibar: it is smaller than Nyerere, a one-day option with a return flight exists, and the entrance fee is lower. Offers checked in October 2026 range from about 465 to 580 dollars per adult for a group day trip with flights, lunch and park fees, and up to about 985 dollars in a private vehicle. The park is flat and open, and animals are easy to spot from the track. This page tells you what you will see, what the price includes and when to choose Mikumi over Nyerere.
Highlights

The zebras and the plain's herds
The wide Mkata plains attract zebras, wildebeest, impalas and buffalo. You often see them up close from the vehicle, with no long walk.

The giraffes
Mikumi is known for its giraffes, seen on the savannah and under scattered trees. Elephants and hippos are common according to guides, lions much less certain.
The hippo pool
Day tours often include a stop at a waterhole where hippos gather. Ask the agency whether this stop is on the programme.

Tips
- Mikumi is a shorter safari than Nyerere: no boat trip, but less time lost on the track. Compare three things before booking: the price (a group option around 465 to 470 dollars, a longer 13-hour option around 580 dollars, a private vehicle around 985 dollars), the duration (about 10 to 13 hours) and what is included. Park entrance fees are about 30 to 35 dollars per adult per day according to a travel site checked in 2026 (another gives 50 dollars), with no confirmed official scale; they are included in most day packages. Also check flights, lunch, guide and hotel transfers. Take your passport for the domestic flight and a light soft bag: the luggage limit on small planes is strict (confirm with the agency). Talk to your doctor about malaria, see visa, vaccinations and formalities. If you want more variety (river, boat, elephants and hippos in a wild setting), look at the Selous (Nyerere) safari, which costs more. For your budget, see the Zanzibar travel budget.
How to get there
From Zanzibar, the agency organises the return flight to the park and the 4x4 drive. The day lasts about 10 to 13 hours depending on the offer and starts early: ask whether your hotel pickup is included. Without a plane, the journey is much longer (ferry to Dar es Salaam, then road), which forces an overnight stay. See from Zanzibar airport to your hotel to plan your arrival, and getting around Zanzibar.
