Mahale Mountains (Tanzania): chimpanzee trek, permit, prices and access from Kigoma (2026)

Updated on October 25, 2026

Mahale Mountains National Park borders Lake Tanganyika, far from everything: you come by boat or bush plane to follow chimpanzees in the mountain forest. It is an expensive, slow expedition to book through an agency. A chimpanzee trek costs about 94 to 100 dollars of permit per person according to third-party sources of October 2026 (no official tariff re-read), and the 3-day package from Kigoma starts at about 2,400 to 2,700 dollars per person on GetYourGuide. Allow at least 3 days, 5 to 7 with Gombe.

Visiting groups are limited (six people per group and about twelve visitors a day according to third-party sources): book early. The walk lasts about 5 hours according to the GetYourGuide offer we saw; average fitness is enough.

The ridges drop into Lake Tanganyika; the boat ride, then the camp or lodge on the beach, are part of the stay.

Tips

  • Mahale or Gombe? Gombe is closer, smaller and cheaper (see the Gombe page): choose it for 1 to 2 days. Mahale is a trip of its own, with more chances to spend time with the animals, but it needs 3 days at least and a much larger budget. The 3-day package we found includes lodging, meals, permit, guide and boats from Kigoma; it does not include flights, visas, insurance and tips. Access is costly: the boat from Kigoma takes 3 to 4 hours depending on the lodge (up to 6 according to one source, 15 hours by wooden boat), the flight to the park airstrip is the simplest, and the old MV Liemba ferry is the budget solution, on an irregular schedule. For insurance and vaccines, see visa, vaccines and formalities and vaccines and malaria.

How to get there

Scheduled or charter flight to the Mahale airstrip, or boat from Kigoma (3 to 6 hours depending on the source). From Zanzibar, go through Dar es Salaam then Kigoma (flights not checked).

Opening hours

Best: July to October
3 days minimum: crossing, trek day, return. Times depend on the boat or flight.
