What is allowed, in practice
According to the press, sales licences are strictly controlled and an official body (the Alcohol Prevention and Control Board) issues them to hotels, bars and liquor shops. For the traveller, that means: drink at the hotel, the restaurant or the licensed bar, not in the street, and be discreet outside tourist areas. We have no written rule for Forodhani or for public beaches: ask your hotel.
Where to find alcohol
| Place | Alcohol? | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Tourist hotels (north, east, south) | Generally yes | But shortages occurred in 2024 |
| Licensed bars and restaurants in Stone Town | Yes, depending on the place | Ask before sitting down |
| Villages and non-tourist areas | Rarely | Do not count on it |
In 2024 a shortage pushed beer prices up by about 100% and several tourist hotels in the north (Matemwe coast) served only soft drinks: guests had to go to Stone Town. We do not know whether the situation has fully returned to normal; ask your hotel if it matters to you.
Ramadan
On 11 March 2026 the Zanzibar government banned the sale of alcohol in all areas without tourist activity during Ramadan, except in a few authorised tourist hotels. Ramadan dates move earlier by about ten days every year: check them before booking. Outside hotels, expect restaurants closed in the daytime and fewer bars open; that is no reason to avoid the island, but plan your evenings.
Drinking with an experience
For a drink in good company, a sunset dhow cruise is the classic option: some offers include a glass of wine or a beer (a north-coast cruise listing says so), others exclude drinks; read the details before booking. Prices seen range from about 20 to 30 dollars per person for group trips. See also our restaurants in Zanzibar.
